Keep the Warmth In and the Cold Out: The Benefits of Blackout Thermal Lining
As the temperatures drop and the evenings draw in, creating a warm and cosy home becomes more important than ever. One simple way to improve comfort during the colder months is to choose the right lining for your curtains.
At Olla Curtains and Blinds, I believe beautiful window dressings should do more than simply look good. With the right lining, your bespoke curtains can also help keep your home warmer, improve your sleep and create a more comfortable living environment.
What Is Blackout Thermal Lining?
Blackout thermal lining is a specially designed fabric added to the back of curtains to help reduce unwanted light and provide an extra layer of insulation at your windows.
I particularly use lining with a luxurious silk finish and a super-soft feel. Made from 100% blackout material and responsibly sourced recycled polyester, it combines practical benefits with a refined finish.
Available in timeless shades including Ivory, White, Almond and Cream, it can complement a wide range of curtain fabrics and interior styles.
5 Benefits of Blackout Thermal Lining
1. Keep Your Home Warmer in Winter
Windows can be a source of heat loss, particularly during the colder months. Thermal blackout lining adds an extra layer to your curtains, helping to reduce heat loss and create a warmer, cosier atmosphere.
It can be especially beneficial in bedrooms, living rooms and rooms with larger windows, where keeping the cold out makes a noticeable difference to comfort.
2. Enjoy a Better Night's Sleep
Light from street lamps, early morning sunshine or passing cars can disturb your sleep. Blackout lining helps block unwanted light, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms, children's rooms and nurseries.
Combined with beautifully made curtains, it helps create a darker, more restful space for the whole family.
3. Create a Cosy, Peaceful Environment
Thicker, lined curtains can help soften outside noise, making your home feel calmer and more relaxing. Although blackout lining is not soundproof, the additional fabric can contribute to a more comfortable indoor environment.
4. Help Reduce Energy Consumption
By helping to retain warmth, thermal-lined curtains may reduce the need for additional heating. This can support a more energy-conscious home, particularly when combined with good insulation, draught-proofing and sensible heating habits.
Every home is different, but choosing the right curtain lining is a practical step towards making your rooms more comfortable throughout winter.
5. Protect Your Curtains and Furnishings
Blackout lining also helps protect the decorative fabric of your curtains from direct sunlight. Over time, sunlight can cause fabrics to fade or deteriorate, so an additional lining can help preserve their appearance and extend their life.
It's a practical benefit that helps your investment in beautiful, bespoke curtains last longer.
Are Blackout Thermal Curtains Right for Your Home?
Blackout thermal lining is a particularly good option for bedrooms, nurseries, north-facing rooms and windows that feel cold during winter. It can also be useful in living rooms where you want extra comfort without compromising on style.
The beauty of bespoke curtains is that you don't have to choose between practicality and appearance. With a wide choice of decorative fabrics, headings and lining options, your curtains can be tailored to suit your home and your needs.
